Teesside-based Cavendish Northern Limited wins piping pre-fabrication contract on major Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) East Coast Cluster projects

  • Michael Shanks MP, Minister for Energy in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero welcomes the announcement during a visit to Teesside.
  • NZT Power, Northern Endurance Partnership, and major contractors have now awarded over 250 UK subcontracts with a combined value of over £2bn.

18 JUNE 2026, Teesside – The East Coast Cluster, which brings together NZT Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), continues to deliver significant regional economic benefits as construction activity ramps up across one of the UK government’s first two carbon capture and storage clusters.

Michael Shanks MP, Minister for Energy in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, has welcomed the award of a significant East Coast Cluster subcontract to Cavendish Northern Limited (Cavendish) – a specialist pipework and mechanical installation company headquartered on Teesside.

The piping prefabrication contract, which has been awarded by Technip Energies, will see vital work being carried out at Cavendish’s state-of-the-art facility in Billingham and is expected to create more than 60 new roles at the site.

The new positions span a wide range of skills and disciplines – including welders, platers, pipefitters, inspectors, quality assurance professionals, and management staff – delivering skilled, long-term employment opportunities for people across Teesside at a time when the region is establishing itself as a hub for the UK’s clean energy transition.

Cavendish, who already employ seven apprentices and recently recruited three more, expect further opportunities to be created for young people as a result of the contract – highlighting how the projects are creating genuine opportunities for local people within the regional supply chain.

To date, NZT Power, NEP, and their major contractors have awarded over 250 UK subcontracts with a combined value of over £2bn. The projects are on course to create and support over 3,000 jobs during the construction period.

Minister Shanks welcomed the news during a visit to the Teesworks Skills Academy, where he met with Jonathan Brown, Cavendish Northern Ltd.’s Operations Director, and representatives from Technip Energies, NZT Power, NEP, along with apprentices currently working on the projects.

Minister Shanks said: “Carbon capture, usage, and storage projects are driving investment, economic growth and supporting thousands of jobs in the north east of England. It is a welcome next step that this contract has been awarded, as we continue to make progress delivering first of a kind carbon capture projects in the UK in partnership with British businesses.”

Jonathan Brown, Cavendish Northern Limited’s Operations Director, said: “The award of NZT Power’s Piping Prefabrication contract to Cavendish Northern Ltd is a fantastic opportunity. It enables us to provide long-term employment for Teesside’s skilled tradespeople, further invest in our apprenticeship training programme, and continue reinvesting in our fabrication facilities. This strengthens our business, supports the local workforce, and helps us achieve our ambition of becoming one of the UK’s leading pipework and mechanical installation contractors.”

Matthew Allan, Senior Project Manager, Technip Energies, said: “Through NZT Power – NEP, we are actively contributing to the reindustrialisation of North East England while demonstrating our ability to mobilise local supply chains and support job creation. We are committed to delivering projects that create lasting value and leave a strong, enduring legacy across the UK.”

Rich Denny, Managing Director, NEP, said: “This latest contract award is a clear demonstration of how the East Coast Cluster is delivering real benefits for local communities. By working with companies like Cavendish and creating high-quality, skilled jobs across Teesside, we are not only progressing vital carbon capture infrastructure but also helping to build a strong and sustainable regional economy. It’s particularly encouraging to see opportunities being created for apprentices and young people, ensuring the energy transition leaves a lasting legacy for the next generation.”

Ian Hunter, General Manager, NZT Power, said: “The creation of skilled fabrication roles at Teesside based Cavendish Northern is a fantastic example of how NZT Power is supporting the regional supply chain. NZT Power and our partners are proud of the genuine opportunities for local people and local businesses being created during construction and that is something we – are determined to build on as the project progresses.”

Olivia Powis, CEO of the CCSA, said: “This is another great example of the CCUS industry delivering real economic benefits for businesses and communities across the UK. As construction accelerates on the East Coast Cluster, UK companies are winning high-value contracts, creating skilled jobs and investing in local capabilities. Projects like these will not only help decarbonise industry and power generation but also strengthen UK supply chains and drive long-term growth in industrial regions such as Teesside.”

Teesworks Ltd chairman Chris Musgrave OBE said: “Michael Shanks’ visit to Teesworks provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the scale of our operations and the pivotal role Teesworks is playing in supporting the UK’s green energy transition. The regional supply chain partnerships being developed by our tenants, as demonstrated by NZT Power and Cavendish Northern, highlight how Teesworks is driving meaningful economic growth and creating lasting benefits across Teesside. Our focus remains on delivering positive outcomes for local communities while supporting the Government’s Net Zero ambitions.”

Technip Energies leads a consortium with GE Vernova, alongside construction partner Balfour Beatty and technology partner Shell Catalysts & Technologies, to deliver the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the NZT Power and NEP onshore Power, Capture and Compression project.
