Supplier Spotlight: Potter Grows To Support NZT Power

25 June 2026, Teesside – As construction of NZT Power, set to be the world’s first gas-fired power station with carbon capture, continues on Teesside, the project is already delivering significant economic benefits to businesses and communities across the region. As a result of a contract awarded last year, family-owned Potter Plant Hire has created around 70 new jobs, invested in local skills development, and generated further supply chain activity across Teesside, North Yorkshire and beyond.

Potter Plant Hire: Local Workforce, Local Investment

Potter Plant Hire, based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, was appointed to the NZT Power project in June 2025, providing plant machinery and skilled operators in partnership with main construction contractor Balfour Beatty, with whom the company has worked since 2004.

Since mobilising to site, Potter Plant Hire has created 70 new plant operator roles, all filled by individuals living within an average of 13 miles of the project, a demonstration of the project’s positive impact on surrounding communities. A further four positions have been created within the business to directly support the works. The company has also upskilled 25 existing operators from Red Card to Blue Card status. This means they have progressed from trainee operators to competent operators, raising overall competence levels across the workforce and creating lasting skills improvements in the region.

Potter Plant Hire has also supported two young people from the local area who were keen to begin careers in the industry, by guiding them through the required training, practical experience and accreditations, enabling them to secure permanent positions on site.

Ian Hunter, Managing Director, NZT Power, said: “These appointments are a strong example of what we mean when we talk about delivering for the North East. NZT Power is creating genuine opportunities for local people and local businesses during construction and that is something we are determined to build on as the project progresses.”

Giles Potter, Managing Director, Potter Plant Hire, said: “We are proud to support the NZT Power-NEP Project, contributing not only through plant and skilled personnel, but through meaningful regional investment, workforce development, high safety standards and ongoing community.”
