Multi-Million Pound Upgrade Planned for Redcar Bulk Terminal to Support Net Zero Teesside Power Project

A significant investment in the upgrade of Redcar Bulk Terminal’s (RBT) deep-water quay has been announced, paving the way for the efficient delivery of critical components for the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZTP) project. This multi-million pound project, awarded to North East-based Southbay Engineering Ltd, will ensure that the terminal is equipped to handle the demands of servicing the construction of a world-first CCUS-enabled power plant.

The RBT quay, originally constructed in the 1970s, has played a vital role in supporting the steel and construction industries over its lifetime. The planned upgrades are essential to accommodate the arrival of larger modules, weighing up to 3,500 tonnes, which will be used in the construction of the NZTP plant. These modules will be transported via roll-on/roll-off vessels and then moved to the NZTP construction site.

The upgraded quay will enable:

  • The safe and efficient import of large modules;
  • The utilisation of the River Tees for transport, reducing the impact on local highways;
  • Flexible mooring options for transport barges without disrupting River Tees operations and PD Ports;
  • Continued operation of the Redcar Bulk Terminal for the next 50 years.

“These crucial upgrade works are an important step towards making the Net Zero Teesside Power plant a reality. Carbon capture and storage is a necessity for the UK’s energy transition so as well as revitalising the quay, the works will play a key role in helping the country meet its net zero targets,” said Ian Hunter, Managing Director of Net Zero Teesside Power.

Southbay Engineering Ltd was selected as the principal contractor following a competitive tender process. Design activities are scheduled to commence in January/February 2025, with construction works beginning in April 2025 and targeted completion by the end of 2025.

The project will create numerous employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly. Southbay Engineering Ltd has already employed two new full-time staff members and anticipates supporting up to 30 jobs at peak construction. Additionally, Mott MacDonald, an engineering firm with a presence in North East England as well as a global footprint, will provide project management and site supervision for the construction phase, with this contract anticipated to support 4 full time employees for the duration of the contract.

The full list of local and national contractors being engaged includes:

  • Mott McDonald – Owners Engineer (Project Management and Site Supervision)
  • Tony Gee & Partners – Permanent Design
  • Noble Works -Temporary Works Design
  • Skanska Cementation – Piling
  • Eddie King Steel Fixing – Steel Reinforcement
  • Cleveland Containers – Welfare Cabins

Local businesses will also be utilised for plant hire and concrete supply.

NZT Power, a joint venture between bp and Equinor, could generate up to 742 megawatts of flexible, dispatchable low-carbon power equivalent to the average electricity requirements of over 1 million UK homes . Up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 per year would be captured at the plant, and then transported and securely stored by the NEP in subsea storage sites beneath the North Sea.
