Arrival of Gas Turbine Marks Major Construction Milestone for NZT Power

TEESSIDE, UK– Construction at NZT Power has reached a pivotal milestone with the arrival of its GE Vernova 9HA.02 gas turbine on Teesside – a cornerstone piece of equipment for the generation of flexible, low-carbon power.

Unlocking Flexible, Low-Carbon Power for the UK

The GE Vernova turbine is central to NZT Power’s ability to generate up to 742 megawatts of electricity once operational – enough to meet the average annual power needs of more than 1 million UK homes. It provides the high-efficiency, flexible, and dispatchable power needed when weather-dependent renewables like wind and solar are unavailable.

By pairing gas-fired generation with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), NZT Power delivers the reliable back-up required to strengthen national energy security while supporting the UK’s Clean Power 2030 ambition.

Teesside’s enabling infrastructure

The delivery highlights how Teesside’s industrial infrastructure is directly enabling the UK’s energy transition.

Weighing several hundred tonnes, the turbine was brought safely ashore via Redcar Bulk Terminal’s (RBT) deep-water quay – infrastructure that underwent a multi-million-pound upgrade in 2025, funded by NZT Power, specifically to handle heavy-lift equipment of this scale.

How Combined-Cycle Generation and Carbon Capture Work

NZT Power’s combined cycle designs the project to adjust its output rapidly, providing the agile grid balancing needed as the UK ramps up its reliance on renewable energy.

  • Primary Power Generation: The gas turbine ignites a mixture of air and fuel at high temperatures, spinning heavy-duty blades to turn a generator and produce electricity.
  • Secondary Heat Recovery: High-temperature exhaust heat from the gas turbine is captured to generate steam, driving a secondary steam turbine for additional electricity without burning extra fuel.
  • 95% Carbon Capture: Approximately 95% of the CO₂ produced during generation will be captured on-site before safely transported and permanently stored via infrastructure being developed by the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP).

Technip Energies leads a consortium with GE Vernova, alongside construction partner Balfour Beatty and technology partner Shell Catalysts and Technologies, to deliver the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the NZT Power and NEP onshore Power, Capture and Compression project.

Quotes

Ian Hunter, Managing Director at NZT Power, said: “The turbine’s arrival is a milestone moment for the project as we progress through construction towards our expected start-up in 2028. This technology will enable NZT Power to provide flexible, dispatchable lower-carbon electricity that strengthens UK energy security and backs up renewables, supporting the UK’s Clean Power 2030 ambition.”
