Net Zero Teesside Power announces financial support of new Tees Valley Net Zero Industry scholarship

  • Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) commits to providing skilled job opportunities for young people
  • The £1 million training programme aims at plugging skills gap for the region’s rapidly expanding clean energy sector
  • Successful applicants to gain expertise in welding, instrumentation, pipefitting, electrical engineering, and civil operations

NZT Power today announced financial support of the new Tees Valley Net Zero Industry Scholarship, a £1 million training programme which provides opportunities for people aged 16 and above to gain essential skills in the region’s rapidly expanding clean energy sector.

The sector is currently suffering from a significant skills gap, with the UK Government anticipating requiring an additional 650,000 new high-quality jobs[1]. The scholarship, which is designed to bridge this skills gap, will be powered by NZT Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), equipping successful applicants with industry-recognised qualifications and expertise in welding, instrumentation, pipefitting, electrical engineering, and civil operations. Helping them to secure employment in these cutting-edge sectors.

With 141 scholarship places available, participants will receive £100 per week in term time during their training, which can last up to two years. Training will be delivered through local education providers, including Etc Group – Redcar & Cleveland College & NETA, Middlesbrough College, Hartlepool College of FE, Darlington College, in collaboration with Teesworks Skills Academy.

Mark Lewis, NZT Power and NEP construction manager, said: “Construction of Net Zero Teesside Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership will require thousands of skilled workers. Along with our construction partner Balfour Beatty, we have worked closely with local colleges across the Tees Valley to design a Net Zero Industry Scholarship which will equip people from the region with the skills needed to secure the roles that are urgently required to drive the energy transition”.

The low-carbon sector in Tees Valley is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, with major projects in carbon capture, hydrogen production, and offshore wind requiring a skilled workforce to drive progress.

Applications for the Tees Valley Industry Scholarship are now open. Interested individuals can apply through the participating colleges and training providers.
